April 2008 Issue

Four years ago, when Integrative Nutrition first moved into the new space in the Time Warner Building, I never imagined that we would outgrow it so quickly. But we did. I believe this is partly a tribute to the quality of the services we provide, but also an indication of the soaring interest in America toward a more successful health care system.

This momentum has now allowed us to move next year’s classes to the well-known Avery Fisher Hall at Lincoln Center. Now we will be able to accommodate a greater number of students, which will help us create a bigger ripple effect in the world.

We are a school with a big mission. Our mission is to play a crucial role in improving the health and happiness of Americans, and through that process, create a ripple effect that transforms the world.

Just as our eating habits have become fashionable around the world, so have our health concerns. Overweight people now outnumber undernourished people in the world. The European Commission reports that 38% of European women are obese. Even in Africa, a continent previously associated with hunger and food scarcity, is seeing a drastic rise in obesity and diabetes.

As we train more health counselors to go into their communities and discuss the impact of daily diet and lifestyle, we can make a difference in the world.

Together we can rock this world.

Jason Kessler left NASA to start his own wellness center in New York. While studying at IIN with his mother, he discovered agave. Using the ingredient, he launched Wholemato, a diabetic-friendly, organic, gluten-free, agave-sweetened ketchup, in 2007. Today, it is distributed in 180 stores nationwide, including Whole Foods.

Bookshelf: Hungry Planet: What The World Eats

Peter Menzel and Faith D’Aluisio photographed 30 families in 24 countries for 600 meals. Each family poses with a display of the foods they eat in one week. The book chronicles their visits and includes essays by leading food authorities. This excerpt highlights the influence that the global food market has on the presence of street food and culture.
