Carbs: Are They “In” Again?
Joshua Rosenthal, Founder, Director, and Primary Teacher of the Institute for Integrative Nutrition shares his wisdom about creating a healthy and happy life that helps transform the world.
Just when you were starting to love the Paleo Diet, I’ve got news that may make you pause before taking your next bite of juicy steak! Researchers in Australia have discovered that mice on a low-protein, high-carb diet saw the same health benefits as a 40% calorie restriction diet even when their calories were unrestricted!
You heard right – the mice who enjoyed their Cheerios also enjoyed improved insulin, blood sugar, and cholesterol levels, despite the fact that they consumed more calories than the mice on a calorie restricted diet. They did not gain weight, and their metabolism was higher than that of the calorie restricted mice!
So should you start hoarding the dinner rolls next time you go out to eat? Mice are not humans, of course, so more research needs to be done. Very often, though, what applies to mice also applies to us.
If you’re considering including healthy carbs in your diet, whole grains are better than refined. Avoid wheat and get adventurous and try quinoa and amaranth.
