Why Being Bad is Actually Good For You
Have you ever noticed that nutrition and wellness can have too many rules associated with them? Especially when it comes to healthy eating, we are often bombarded by rules that state “eat this, not that” and “do this every day” or “don’t mix these things except if there’s a full moon!” It can be overwhelming to follow the rules of healthy living while also maintaining happiness.
Of course, at Integrative Nutrition we’re big believers in daily practices for wellness. While I see food as medicine, I also see things like meditation, physical activity and positive relationships as equally important components of well being. I believe in moderation, fun, and being spontaneous from time to time.
Many of us subconsciously feel like being “good” is what makes us valuable. We often put pleasing others above pleasing ourselves. We get attached to rules and fear the consequences of breaking them. But it’s an important skill to learn to put yourself first, because only them are you a true source of benefit to others.
Besides, life can get dull if you are too attached to your habits, healthy as they might be. And there’s something exciting about doing something you feel you “shouldn’t” do or feel is irresponsible. It makes you feel adventurous and free, and that’s a good thing for a happy, healthy life!
So, over the next week I invite you to do something 'bad" every single day.
Of course, I'm not asking you to do something illegal or put yourself or anyone else in danger, but how about playing hooky from work, finally telling someone what you really think, eating a regular cookie… or two. There is pleasure in these experiences, assuming you don’t go too far. And pleasure is vital nourishment for the spirit.
The purpose behind this exercise is to put you back in charge of your life, and to connect with your playful side. It’s amazing what can happen when you throw caution to the wind on occasion!
So, how are you going to be "bad"? Tell me in the comments below to help inspire yourself and others!
