It's one thing to vote with our forks. It's another thing entirely for the food movement to turn actively political. But activist Michael Pollan says now is the time to show Big Agriculture that we mean business when it comes to labeling GMOs. Here's why we all should care about California's Proposition 37.

Research suggests that certain bodies are more responsive to the benefits of regular exercise, and now there's a genetic test. The test only measures physical fitness, however, and not the long-term psychological or health benefits that regular exercise can have for all of us. (TIME)

A sugar-sweetened beverage tax may be "the single most effective measure to reverse the obesity epidemic," according to the director of the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention. But if that doesn't convince you, here's more on the soda tax debate. (New York Times)

Integrative Nutrition Reviews: Kicking Cancer in the Kitchen

We’ve all known someone who has been affected by cancer. Though there are many aspects of this terrible disease that still remain a tragic mystery, thankfully researchers now know that many forms of cancer can be prevented simply by eating whole foods, exercising regularly, and making healthy lifestyle choices. October is Breast Cancer Awareness Month, a great time to learn and empower all of us to take charge of our own health and adopt habits conducive to a long, happy life.

But what if you or someone you love has already been diagnosed with the “Big C”?  Are there any ways you can take matters into your own hands? That’s exactly what Integrative Nutrition graduates Annette Ramke, Class of 2010, and Kendall Scott, Class of 2009, did when the they were diagnosed with cancer. Kendall is a Hodgkin’s Lymphoma survivor diagnosed at age 27, and Annettte survived breast and ovarian cancer, with her first diagnosis at 36. Together they’ve just released Kicking Cancer in the Kitchen, an inspiring cookbook and guide designed to help people not only survive, but thrive, during cancer – from diagnosis through intense treatment and beyond.

Health Coaching Goes Global

As our international community grows, our graduates are increasingly addressing the needs of different countries and cultures. Dr. Marion Alvarez, class of 2011, is an outstanding example of a cross-cultural Health Coach, striving to not only serve her local Los Angeles clients, but also the people of her home country, Mexico.

What were you doing prior to enrolling at Integrative Nutrition?

I went to medical school in Mexico and, after graduation, decided to become a surgeon. So I moved to Los Angeles to prepare for the medical board examinations, took the exams, and successfully passed them all. But before applying for my US residency, I decided to move back to Mexico for a while, where I completed a fellowship in aesthetic medicine (cosmetic dermatology) and opened a medical office. Things were going well, and I had a lot of patients, but something was missing...

At last weekend’s live conference, guest lecturer (and 1998 grad) Andrea Beaman inspired us to invest in our health. With a few savvy tips, healthy eating can come at a surprisingly moderate price. In her book, Long Way on a Little, Shannon Hayes talks about stretching those sustainable food dollars, and making the most of the scraps. (Grist)

To be in a room with like-minded people who have the same goal: to help people live healthier lives, is incredibly powerful. I’ve been to a few live conferences and each one brings new motivation, inspiration, curiosity and admiration.

To lead this amazing group of visionaries, there was a fabulous unit of well-known and talented leaders in the wellness field. While each speaker was remarkable in presenting his or her unique message to the crowd, there seemed to be an underlying theme:
It’s time to get real with life, to change your focus, your mindset, and create the life you love, nourishing yourself from the inside out.

How to Stop Procrastinating and Achieve Goals Faster

Are you putting off an important task to read this blog? If so, you’re not alone. Procrastination is a common behavior of putting off doing important tasks for something less urgent or important.

Why do we do it?

According to the Science of Procrastination, this very common behavior occurs because, in our minds, we have a tendency to overestimate or underestimate the value of a reward depending on how soon we’ll get it. In other words, the further away the reward, the more you discount its value.

Even if you have all kinds of good intentions, and you’re motivated because of a change of season, a new year, or a new outlook on life, you still might delay working toward what you want. 

A Weekend of LIVE Energy at Integrative Nutrition

We are so excited by the number of students and graduates who participated in last weekend’s Integrative Nutrition Live Conference! Hundreds of you joined us in New York City to enjoy the beautiful autumn weather, and – for the first time ever - thousands tuned in via Live Stream to experience the event online. The energy was incredible, and it’s all thanks to you!

Integrative Nutrition Founder, Director, and Primary Teacher Joshua Rosenthal led the festivities, encouraging students to tap into their unrealized potential, as well as the talents and resources within the IIN community.

Career Change and Personal Transformation

While training to guide others to health and happiness is at the core of the Integrative Nutrition curriculum, many students undergo a personal transformation in the process.

What led you to explore the Health Coach Training Program?

My prior field, technical communications, was on the decline, and my job contract had ended. I’ve been passionate about health and nutrition for decades, and while doing some online research, I came across Integrative Nutrition. It was the only program I found that truly inspired me.

Students from a Kansas high school are speaking out against Michelle Obama's school lunch reforms, which restrict calorie counts at public schools in order to combat childhood obesity. But their hunger pangs seem to be symptoms of picky eating, more so than an actual lack of sustenance. (ABC News)

Scientists across the globe have harshly criticized the methods of a recent French study suggesting a strong link between GMOs and cancer, but the Russian government isn’t taking any chances. The country’s decision to to block the importation and use of American GM corn may be dramatic, but it also may be a sign of things to come. (Daily Mail)
