What Is a Health Coach?

A Health Coach is a supportive mentor who helps clients reach their wellness goals and feel their best through personalized, one-on-one encouragement around finding the foods and lifestyle practices that work best for them.

What Makes a Health Coach Unique?

Health Coaches provide guidance and accountability – from exercise and nutrition to relationships, career, and spirituality – for their clients as they embark on a journey toward optimal holistic health.

The World Needs Health Coaches

Nearly 30% of the world’s population are overweight or obese.

Doctors receive little nutrition training in four years of medical school.

Six million Canadian adults have high blood pressure, representing 19% of the adult population.

Nearly a quarter of Canadian adults (or 5.8 million people) suffer from hypertension.

Extended health care are only used at 50% of the recommended rate.

open restaurants, and even teach.

What Do Health Coaches Do?

A Health Coach’s day-to-day responsibilities can vary widely, depending on whether you pursue a full-time coaching practice; support another kind of health practitioner, such as a doctor or nutritionist; or start another type of business with your expertise. A Health Coach’s main role is to support clients in achieving their unique health and wellness goals, from making healthier nutrition choices to managing stress and anxiety. To help clients implement sustainable long-term habits, a Health Coach curates a safe space for them to explore all areas of their well-being.

Those who decide to become Health Coaches are passionate about health and often already in the wellness field, looking to add value to their work experience, such as personal trainers and yoga instructors – though this experience is not required to become a Health Coach! A Health Coach’s role is not to perform clinical work or prescribe, diagnose, or treat any specific condition. They teach clients to take a holistic approach to transforming their health, looking at not just food but all areas of life that can impact well-being, such as your environment, relationships, career, spirituality, and much more. Health Coaches support clients in implementing diet and lifestyle changes, such as those that are recommended by their doctor, nutritionist, or dietitian.

How Is Integrative Nutrition Different?

We don’t believe in “one-size-fits-all" wellness, unlike many mainstream approaches. Our Health Coach Training Program is rooted in a philosophy we call bio-individuality. This is simply the understanding that each of us is radically unique – physical, mental, emotional, and spiritual needs will look different from one person to the next. What you define as good health – and the path you take to get there – may not work for anyone else. Embracing these differences and finding the healthy lifestyle practices that work for you is exactly how you’ll achieve holistic health.

That’s why every Health Coach who emerges from Integrative Nutrition’s training program learns to put bio-individuality into practice, no matter what career path they embark on. Along with this deep understanding of how to take a personalized approach with every client, IIN Health Coaches also learn about nourishing with primary food – the things off your plate that affect your health, such as the quality of your relationships, your spirituality, and much more.

In our one-year (English and Spanish-supported) and accelerated six-month programs (English and Spanish-supported), we equip you with the tools you need to develop these unique and personalized coaching skills. We also provide what you need to build a successful business, whether you run a coaching practice or want to branch out as a wellness entrepreneur. In your education journey with Integrative Nutrition, you’ll explore nutrition and nutrition science, functional and integrative medicine, personal development, coaching methodologies, and business and marketing – combined to create a well-rounded Health Coach education.

IIN Is Mission-Driven

We’re proud to say that Integrative Nutrition is the largest online health coaching and nutrition school in the world with over 100,000 students and graduates in 175 countries.

Founded nearly 30 years ago by Joshua Rosenthal, our Health Coach Training Program started as just a small group of like-minded people in a rented kitchen in New York City! At the time, holistic health wasn't as mainstream as it is today, but since then, Joshua’s pioneering vision for global health and happiness has grown exponentially because we are driven by our mission.

We believe that food changes everything.

By learning and teaching the deep values of holistic wellness and nutrition, we’re building a bottom-up movement to reverse the global health crisis, reduce chronic disease, and empower people around the world to take control of their health and well-being. IIN is spreading the ripple effect of health and happiness, one Health Coach at a time.

We’re not just a school; we’re a movement.

That’s why our curriculum includes over 90 of the world’s leading educators, researchers, physicians, and experts in nutrition, health, wellness, and behavior change. It’s all part of the ripple effect – our vision for spreading positive change in the world as each one of us works toward true health and holistic self-improvement. We’re honored to be at the center of this growing movement, and we can’t wait to see what the future holds.
