Fatherhood has a way of changing how you see the world.
For many fathers, it deepens their sense of responsibility, reshapes their priorities, and inspires them to think differently about their health—not just for themselves, but for the people who depend on them.
It often begins with a simple question: How can I show up fully for my family?
For these students and graduates of the Institute for Integrative Nutrition (IIN), that question became the starting point for something bigger. Through personal health challenges, family experiences, and pivotal life transitions, they discovered that wellness is about far more than food. It's about presence. Purpose. Resilience. Connection.
What began as a desire to better support their loved ones evolved into a calling to help others do the same through health coaching.
This Father's Day, we're celebrating four members of the IIN community whose experiences as fathers transformed not only their own lives, but the lives of the families and clients they now serve.
Each journey is different. Yet together, they reveal a powerful truth: when fathers prioritize their well-being, the impact extends far beyond themselves—shaping families, strengthening communities, and creating ripple effects that last for generations.
"Becoming a father taught me that the most important thing in life is being present with the person you are sharing time with."
For Reed Cain, fatherhood and health coaching are deeply intertwined.
When his son became seriously ill at just four years old, Reed and his family embarked on a long and difficult journey filled with doctor visits, prescriptions, and uncertainty. Despite years of seeking answers, nothing seemed to help—until a chance introduction to a new way of thinking about food and health changed everything.
A shift in diet transformed his son's well-being, restoring vibrant health and opening Reed's eyes to the powerful role that lifestyle can play in healing. That experience ultimately inspired him to pursue health coaching.
Today, Reed brings the same compassion, presence, and empathy he developed as a father into every client session. He believes that supporting others begins with creating space for self-discovery, self-love, and meaningful change.
One of the most impactful concepts Reed learned at IIN was autonomy—the understanding that people thrive when they're empowered to make choices aligned with their own values and beliefs. It's a principle that continues to shape both his family relationships and his coaching practice
"Everything is connected," Reed reflects. "Without my awesome son, I may not have received these incredible gifts in my life that, in turn, support my journey as a health coach."
"Our kids are only with us in this way for a short season, and I wanted to make the most of that time together."
For more than 17 years, Dr. Joshua Sharp ran a busy chiropractic practice. While he loved helping others, the demanding schedule often meant leaving before his children woke up and returning home after they had gone to bed.
Fatherhood changed the way he viewed success.
Recognizing how quickly childhood passes, Joshua began searching for a way to continue serving others while creating more time for his family. Health coaching provided that opportunity.
Since completing his training at IIN, he has been able to spend significantly more time with his children while building a career aligned with his values.
His experiences as a father also shaped his mission. Today, Joshua helps parents reclaim their energy, improve their health, and become positive examples for their families.
One of the most surprising lessons he brought home from IIN wasn't nutrition-related at all—it was the power of active listening and high-mileage questions. By asking thoughtful questions and truly listening, he's been able to strengthen communication with his children and encourage them to tackle challenges while feeling seen and understood.
"Your kids are always watching," he says. "Your decisions affect others more than you realize."
"The most powerful thing you can model for your child is not perfection — it's the willingness to keep showing up, especially on the hard days."
For Alejandro Arango, fatherhood wasn't just part of his health coaching journey—it was the reason for it.
When his daughter was diagnosed with Type 1 Diabetes at a young age, everything changed. Already living with T1D himself, Alejandro understood the daily realities of managing the condition. But seeing his daughter face the same challenges gave him a new perspective on what families truly need.
Medical guidance is important, he explains, but so is having someone who understands the emotional and practical realities of living with a chronic condition every day.
That realization led him to IIN and ultimately inspired his work supporting adults with Type 1 Diabetes and families raising children with T1D.
At home, health conversations are simply part of family life. Alejandro, his daughter, and their family regularly navigate topics like blood sugar management, stress, sleep, and nutrition together.
One of the concepts that most transformed his perspective was IIN's philosophy of Primary Food—the idea that relationships, purpose, movement, spirituality, and connection nourish us just as deeply as what's on our plates.
"In a family managing Type 1 Diabetes, it's easy to focus only on numbers," he says. "Primary Food helped us zoom out and ask a different question: How are we doing as people?"
That shift has influenced not only how his family approaches health, but also how he supports clients through life's challenges.
"If I wanted to become the fully present father I felt called to be, I needed to be willing to make changes in my health, career, and priorities."
Ryan Massey's journey to health coaching has been shaped by resilience, healing, and a commitment to family.
At age 15, he survived a devastating car accident that left him living with chronic pain for nearly fifteen years. After eventually finding both physical and emotional healing, he assumed that story would become the foundation of the work he would one day do.
Then life took another unexpected turn.
When his wife was diagnosed with colon cancer, Ryan found himself immersed in the world of holistic health and nutrition. Determined to better support his family, he began searching for answers and quickly realized how overwhelming health information could be.
Finding IIN provided the framework he had been looking for.
Fatherhood also inspired major changes in his career. Wanting more time with his children, Ryan left a demanding job and began creating space for a different future. More recently, he and his family made an even bolder leap—selling their Southern California home and embracing full-time travel with their three children while exploring what comes next.
Through it all, Ryan has learned that health is about far more than physical well-being. The concept of Primary Food profoundly shifted his perspective, helping him recognize the importance of relationships, purpose, spirituality, and environment in shaping overall wellness.
"Health isn't about chasing perfection," Ryan says. "It's about creating the capacity to be present for the people we have been entrusted with."
While each of these fathers arrived at health coaching through a different path, their stories share a common thread: fatherhood became an invitation to grow.
For Reed, it was a son's remarkable health journey that revealed the transformative power of food and empowered choice.
For Joshua, it was the desire to be more present during his children's fleeting early years.
For Alejandro, it was navigating Type 1 Diabetes alongside his daughter and discovering the profound impact of empathy, support, and shared experience.
For Ryan, it was a series of life-changing health challenges that ultimately clarified what mattered most: being fully present for his family.
Along the way, each discovered that wellness isn't simply about preventing illness or following a perfect routine. It's about creating a life that allows you to show up with energy, purpose, and intention for the people you love.
At IIN, we often talk about health as something multidimensional—shaped not only by what's on our plate, but by our relationships, purpose, career, spirituality, and daily choices. These fathers embody that philosophy.
Their stories remind us that some of the most meaningful transformations begin not with a personal goal, but with a desire to care for someone else.
This Father's Day, we celebrate the fathers who lead by example, who continue learning and growing, and who understand that one of the greatest gifts they can give their families is their own well-being.
Happy Father's Day.
