Recently, we had a chance to check in with our friends at the Earth Day Network and asked them to share their top tips for make a difference on the planet. Check out what they had to say below!
Did you know that April 22, 2016, marks the 46th annual celebration of Earth Day? Since its start back in 1970, Earth Day has sparked an unprecedented environmental movement and created a legacy that we still celebrate today.
That first year, nearly 20 million Americans participated in Earth Day by advocating for a cleaner planet. Now over one billion people in 192 countries participate in Earth Day activities, making it the largest civic observance in the world.
The theme of Earth Day 2016 is Trees for the Earth. Trees are so important to the health of the planet, and they also provide critical benefits to people such as food and oxygen. You can learn more about how important trees are by visiting Earth Day Network’s Canopy Project.
It’s easy to think that what we do as individuals doesn’t make a difference to the planet, but the truth is that we can make a huge impact on the environment by making small changes in our daily lives to be more sustainable.
In 2011, Earth Day Network launched the Billion Acts of Green, the world's largest environmental service campaign. So far, people have registered over two billion global acts of green. Actions range from community tree plantings and large-scale light bulb changes to washing laundry in cold water and recycling. Every individual act of green is valuable and makes a difference on the planet.
1. One easy change is to use your own reusable bag on each trip to the store. Each year, the world uses around 500 billion plastic bags, many of which end up in our rivers and oceans. Just think of the difference we could make if we all made this simple switch!
2. How about literally going the extra mile to green your commute? If each person swapped their car for a bicycle - to work or while running errands - just once every two weeks, we would save one billion gallons of gasoline per year. And every mile pedaled rather than driven keeps about one pound of carbon dioxide and other pollutants out of the air we breathe.
3. Finally, the diet we eat has a huge impact on the planet. The meat industry is responsible for approximately 20% of the world’s greenhouse gas emissions. Going meat-free just one day a week, often referred to as Meatless Mondays, can make a real difference. If over the course of a year you ate one less burger a week, it would be the equivalent of taking your car off the road for 320 miles. Switching to a plant-based vegetarian diet does even more to reduce our use of energy, water and gas.
