Improve Your Health and the Planet on Earth Day

Share this Article:

We’re celebrating Earth Day all week long! Tune in for tips to reduce your carbon footprint, ways to make a difference, and more! We’re also honoring the commitment of every new student who enrolls this week by donating $100 to the Earth Day Network in their honor so we can spread the ripple effect of improved health and happiness far and wide.

Over the years, the world has celebrated Earth Day with various initiatives like planting trees, recycling, carpooling and more. This Earth Day, we’ve rounded up the best ways to save the planet and feel healthier in the process. Whether it’s eating sustainably or finding creative ways to commute to work, we’ve got you covered.

Ditch your car
For Earth Day (and beyond), find new ways to get to work while exercising in the process. Gather a group to walk to work, or create an inspiring music playlist and jam out while you walk to work solo. If you want a faster commute, ride your bike or rent one through a bike-share program. Check out this extensive list of bike-share cities in the U.S. You may be surprised by how many cities now offer the service!  In addition to biking or walking, you can also rollerblade or skateboard to work.

Eat less meat
Opt for vegetarian dishes to help the environment and your health. After all, it’s estimated that cows produce about 20 percent of all methane emissions. At Integrative Nutrition, we don’t encourage one type of diet over another, but it’s worth noting that last year, the World Health Organization declared red meats such as beef and pork as “probably carcinogenic.”

Test your green thumb
April brings Earth Day, as well as National Gardening Month! Gardening is a great way to burn calories (about 200 to 400 per hour), has been shown to reduce the risk of osteoporosis and is also beneficial for the planet—just be sure to follow these tips for creating an environmentally conscious garden. For example, choose landscaping techniques that conserve water and are friendly to wildlife.

Shop the farmers market
If you’re not into the idea of starting a garden, shop for local produce at your farmers market. According to Reader’s Digest Best Health, food on average travels more than 1,500 miles to get to your table, so buying from a local farmers market greatly reduces this journey. Not only that, but you’ll be doing your health a favor too by eating the most seasonal foods. At Integrative Nutrition, we’re big proponents of seasonally based eating.

Do some spring cleaning
It’s that time of year when we all feel the urge to clean and organize. While you’re at it, make sure you use natural cleaning products (you can make your own with vinegar), and recycle anything you can including electronics. A clean house will give you a calmer peace of mind. And according to a recent study, it may even help you avoid overeating.
