Detoxification is the process by which fat-soluble toxins are converted into water-soluble compounds to be properly eliminated from the body. Our body detoxifies all day every day, eliminating toxins, such as pesticides found in the food we eat, pollutants in the water we drink, compounds in the pharmaceutical drugs we take, by-products of normal cellular processes, and even stress!
The scientific definition of detox is slightly different from the wellness world’s definition, which is why detox has become synonymous with juice cleanses, strict diets, and even more alternative practices like taking drugs that are hallucinogenic or cause the body to void everything in its system. This is not to say that doing any of these things is “bad,” but many people feel a perceived need to look to fad or trendy detox practices rather than determining if they are safe or beneficial for their individual health.
These detoxing methods are sold as “one size fits all” – but how can one type of detox work for everyone? IIN’s core concept of bio-individuality encourages us to explore what works for us as a unique individual, which also means seeking foods and lifestyle practices that make us feel healthy and vibrant!
