Ayurveda vs. Homeopathy: Understanding the Difference

The implementation of alternative medicine and health care has surged within the past several years. because people are looking for new avenues to find relief, healing, and individualized self-care. 

Among a growing interest of health care alternatives, two prominent systems that have really stood among others are Ayurveda and Homeopathy. These approaches to holistic health both offer unique perspectives on health and healing, wellness, natural remedies, and an overall enhanced state of being. However, they differ in their principles and treatments. A Sanskrit word that roughly translates to "the science of life”, Ayurveda and its practices have been around since the 2nd Century B.C., dating back to ancient India.  

What is Ayurveda? 

Ayurveda is a system of practicesthat encompasses a more holisticapproach to healing and emphasizes the importance of preventive care and maintaining internal balance to prevent disease. At the core of Ayurvedic medicine is the idea that we possess a unique combination of elements and energies, known as doshas, as well as prakriti (one’s inherent nature, assigned at birth). The doshas are divided into three elements: 

  • Vata: Associated with the elements of air and space, Vata dosha governs movement, including breathing, circulation, and nerve impulses. It is responsible for creativity, flexibility, and quick thinking. When imbalanced, it can lead to anxiety, insomnia, dryness, and digestive issues. 
  • Pitta: Associated with the elements of fire and water, Pitta dosha governs metabolism, digestion, and transformation. It is responsible for intelligence, ambition, and the regulation of body temperature. When imbalanced, it can manifest as anger, inflammation, digestive disorders, and skin problems. 
  • Kapha: Associated with the elements of earth and water, Kapha dosha governs structure, lubrication, and stability. It provides physical strength, endurance, and emotional stability. When imbalanced, it can lead to weight gain, congestion, sluggishness, and attachment.

Everyone typically has a dominant dosha that governs their well-being, while the others are less prominent but can still influence health.

Ayurveda Treatments and Therapies

Ayurveda employs a range of treatments and therapies, including:

  • Herbal remedies
  • Dietary modifications
  • Lifestyle recommendations
  • Detoxification techniques
  • Therapeutic practices such as yoga, meditation, and massage

  • Personalized treatment: Ayurvedic practices are tailored to an individual's unique constitution (think back to the doshas), allowing for personalized treatment plans and options!  
  • Natural and herbal medicine: Ayurveda primarily utilizes natural herbs, plants, and minerals to create remedies, aiming to enhance healing with minimal side effects. 
  • Lifestyle recommendations: Ayurveda emphasizes lifestyle modifications like eating for your dosha(s), intentional exercise, meditation, and individualized daily routines, to maintain health and prevent internal and external illness. 
  • Long-term benefits: Many Ayurvedic treatments focus on addressing the root cause of imbalances rather than just alleviating symptoms – promoting long-term health benefits and an overall improved state of being. 


  • Limited scientific validation: While Ayurveda has a long history and rich traditional knowledge, scientific validation (particularly validation through rigorous clinical trials and research) is relatively limited for many Ayurvedic treatments. 
  • Safety: The quality control and safety standards of Ayurvedic products can vary, and some preparations may contain heavy metals or contaminants. That’s why it’s so important to source products from reputable manufacturers! 
  • Time-intensive approaches: Ayurvedic treatments usually require significant time and commitment, including changes in lifestyle, dietary adjustments, and regular follow-ups – so be prepared for long-term investing.

Homeopathy: The Science of Similars

Now that we’ve explored the holistic approach of Ayurveda, let’s get into the sister treatment it often gets confused with:  

What is Homeopathy?  

Homeopathy was developed in the late 18th century by Samuel Hahnemann, a devoted German physician who longed for a more holistic approach to health and wellness.  

The practice of homeopathy relies primarily on the ‘Homeopathic Law of Similars’, also known as "like cures like.". According to this law, a substance that can cause certain symptoms in a healthy person can be used to treat similar symptoms in an individual who is unwell.  
In short, a substance (when given in tiny doses) can trigger the body's vital force to react and initiate a curative response. 

Homeopathic Treatments and Therapies  

As an alternative form of medicine, Homeopathy uses highly diluted remedies made from plants, minerals, or animal sources. The remedies undergo a process called potentization, which is believed to enhance their healing properties. Treatment is individualized based on the specific symptoms and characteristics of the person. 

Benefits and Limitations of Homeopathy  


  • Individualized treatment: the practice of Homeopathy considers the unique symptoms and characteristics of each person, offering personalized treatment tailored to their specific needs. 
  • Holistic approaches: Homeopathy aims to address the underlying causes of illness rather than merely suppressing symptoms, focusing on the physical, mental, and emotional well-being of the patient. 
  • Minimal side effects: Homeopathic remedies are highly diluted and gentle, making them generally safe with minimal risk of side effects or interactions with conventional medications. 
  • Non-invasive & non-toxic: Homeopathy does not involve invasive internal and external procedures or harsh chemicals, making it suitable for individuals seeking natural and gentle forms of treatment. 
  • Complementary option: Homeopathy and herbal medicine can be used alongside conventional medicine as a complementary therapy, potentially enhancing overall treatment outcomes and reducing the need for high-dose medications! 


  • Lack of scientific evidence: The scientific community has raised concerns regarding the limited scientific evidence supporting the efficacy of homeopathy and alternative medicine. Many studies show mixed or inconclusive results. 
  • Delayed treatment: Homeopathy may not be suitable for acute or life-threatening conditions that require immediate intervention. Delaying conventional medical treatment in such cases can have serious consequences. 
  • Limited regulation: In some countries, the regulation of homeopathic remedies may be less strict compared to conventional medications which can lead to quality control, side effects, and standardization issues. 
  • Individual variation: The selection of homeopathic remedies really depends on the individual, which can make it challenging to find the most effective remedy for each person. The trial-and-error nature of homeopathic treatment may lead to frustration and prolonged healing times for some.

The Differences Between Ayurveda and Homeopathy

While Ayurveda and homeopathy share a holistic approach to health, there are several significant differences between the two systems: 

  • Philosophical and conceptual disparities: Ayurveda focuses on balancing doshas and restoring harmony within the body across all systems, while homeopathy operates on the principle of directly stimulating the body's immune system and self-healing response.  
  • Varying treatment and therapy styles: Ayurveda employs herbal remedies, lifestyle modifications, and various therapies. Homeopathy also relies on herbal remedies, but ones that are highly diluted, and for individualized treatment. 
  • Varying lifestyle, diet, and health views: Ayurveda places a pretty big emphasis on lifestyle, diet, and overall health management, while homeopathy primarily focuses on the use of remedies for specific symptoms.

When considering Ayurveda or homeopathy to maintain good health, there are several factors to consider. Your needs are entirely your own, and thusly, you’ll need to come to your own conclusions on what is best for you:
