Creating a Spiritual Practice

The topic of spirituality is abstract and can be quite ambiguous! Broadly speaking, spirituality can refer to the manner in which we seek, discover, and express meaning and purpose in our lives. For some, spirituality is a way of experiencing interconnectedness with the universe, nature, or the people around them. For others, it can be an inner exploration to answer questions like: Who am I? Why am I here? What is my purpose?

As with everything we teach at IIN, there is bio-individuality when it comes to spirituality. One person’s definition of spirituality – and their actual spiritual practice – will look different from another’s. People’s definitions and meanings of spirituality will likely change over the course of their lifetime as they grow and evolve.

Long story short? There is no right or wrong way to be spiritual!

Regardless of how we define spirituality, having a spiritual practice can be a very important component of our health and happiness. A spiritual practice can help us have a broader perspective on our life, even when things are unknown or scary. By having a sense of purpose and trusting that we are part of something larger than our individual selves, we are more likely to live a happy and fulfilled life.

If you don’t have a spiritual practice, or are looking to adjust an existing practice, here are a few ideas for inspiration:

  1. Spend time alone each day doing nothing. So often we are in an action mode of doing, doing, doing. While action is fantastic and important, it is equally necessary to take time to sit still and just be with ourselves.
  2. Move your body. Physical exercise is a great way to merge our body, mind, and spirit. Try yoga, tai chi, hiking, or bike riding. Explore different types of exercise to see what works for you.
  3. Intentionally breathe. Take a moment each day to stop whatever you’re doing and simply breathe. Our breath is our life force and can be a powerful tool for cultivating mindfulness, connection, and greater peace of mind. 
  4. Join a group. Enjoy exploring interconnectedness and a sense of higher purpose with others in your community. Research spiritual communities in your town to find one that resonates with you.
  5. Set an intention. Before you get started with your day, take a few minutes to set an intention. Perhaps this is writing down your goals, a list of desired feelings, or the gifts you wish to share with others throughout your day. Make it your own.

There are countless ways to foster a spiritual practice in our day-to-day lives. If you’re feeling inspired, take time this week to explore what spirituality means for you and how you can create a unique spiritual practice that aligns with you!
