Global Health Coach Training: IIN’s UKIHCA-Approved Pathway
Health coaching doesn't stop at borders. IIN students and graduates are coaching in London, Dublin, Amsterdam, Canada, Singapore, Sydney, and everywhere in between. And if you're building a practice outside the US, one question comes up again and again: Will my training be recognized where I live?
Today, we’re thrilled to share a new pathway to professional recognition in the UK and beyond! Here’s how IIN’s training supports your next step:
-
Become an IIN Certified Health Coach. Complete The Health Coach Training Program™ to earn your Certified Integrative Nutrition Health Coach certification.
-
Pursue US board certification. Add the Coaching Intensive Practicum to meet the training requirements for the National Board for Health & Wellness Coaching (NBHWC) board exam.
-
Pursue UK and international recognition. Complete both programs—bundled together in our Health Coach Board Certification Training—plus the Independent Coaching Requirement to become eligible to apply for Full Membership with the UK & International Health Coaching Association (UKIHCA) and listing on its Register of Professional Health Coaches.
If you're thinking, "Okay, but what does that actually mean for me?" you're in exactly the right place. Let's break it all down.

First Things First: What Is the UKIHCA?
The UK & International Health Coaching Association is a non-profit professional body for health coaches in the United Kingdom and beyond. Founded in 2018, UKIHCA describes itself as the first professional membership association dedicated to health coaching. Their work centers on three big things:
- Setting the bar. UKIHCA develops rigorous professional standards for health coach education and training and reviews them every three years. Its 2024 standards cover quality assurance for training providers, the knowledge and skills that must be taught, and the competencies expected of graduating coaches (UK & International Health Coaching Association [UKIHCA], 2024a).
- Approving programs that meet it. Only training programs that pass UKIHCA's in-depth review process can offer a direct pathway to Full Membership.
- Advocating for the profession. UKIHCA campaigns for health coaching to be recognized and integrated across healthcare, workplaces, education, and communities, and maintains a central Register of Professional Health Coaches.
Here's the simplest way to think about it: UKIHCA is to the UK and international market what NBHWC is to the US. Both sit a level above certification. NBHWC credentials coaches through a national board exam. UKIHCA credentials coaches through the training and ongoing professional development required to be on its Register of Professional Health Coaches, with no exam required. Different model, same mission: making sure the people who call themselves professional health coaches are well trained, accountable, and working within a clear scope of practice.
Why This Is Such a Big Deal
Professional recognition has never mattered more for health coaches, especially in the UK, where the profession is growing fast.
- Health coaching is going mainstream in the UK. Health and wellbeing coaches are now part of NHS primary care teams, with roughly 1,500 in post, alongside about 800 UKIHCA-approved coaches in professional practice (UKIHCA, 2024b).
- The evidence keeps stacking up. A systematic review of health coaching for adults with chronic conditions found improvements in weight management, physical activity, and both physical and mental health status (Kivelä et al., 2014).
- Credentials build trust. Clients, employers, and healthcare partners want to know you've met a recognized standard. (It's the same reason we argue that no AI tool can replace a real health coaching certification.)
- It opens new rooms to walk into. From clinics to corporate wellness, the places health coaches work keep expanding, and a recognized membership helps you get in the door.
We've seen a similar shift in the US, where professional standards are helping health coaching move closer to mainstream healthcare. (If you missed it, our Program Director broke down the proposal for Medicare coverage of health coaching.) UKIHCA approval brings that same kind of momentum to our international community.
What's New: IIN's UKIHCA-Approved Pathway
Here's the news in a nutshell:
- IIN received Conditional Approval as an Education Training Provider (ETP) from UKIHCA on August 19, 2026, effective May 1, 2026.
- The approved pathway is our updated Health Coach Board Certification Training: The Health Coach Training Program, the Coaching Intensive Practicum, and a new, included Independent Coaching Requirement (ICR).
- IIN is one of only three US-based training programs to offer a pathway to UKIHCA Full Approval.
What does "Conditional" mean for you? Honestly, nothing to worry about! Conditional Approval simply moves to Full Approval once our first graduate completes the pathway and applies for UKIHCA membership. That first graduate could be you.
Welcome back, too! Some of you remember our earlier UKIHCA pathway, which we paused in 2025 while we rebuilt it. The new version is more streamlined, more cost effective, and more student-friendly:
- No third course to enroll in
- More flexibility to complete on your own schedule
- About $700 less than the previous pathway
How the Pathway Works
If you're already looking at the Health Coach Training Program and Coaching Intensive Practicum, you're most of the way there. Here's the full route:
1. Complete The Health Coach Training Program. This is where you become a Certified Integrative Nutrition Health Coach, building your foundation in nutrition, essential coaching skills, and the business of coaching.
2. Complete the Coaching Intensive Practicum. This 12-week program is your pathway to professional credentials worldwide. It’s NBHWC-approved for US board certification, and now approved by UKIHCA as well as the Health Coach Alliance and HCANZA, giving you recognition across the US, UK, Canada, Australia, New Zealand, and beyond.
3. Complete the new Independent Coaching Requirement. This new component lives right inside the final module of CIP and is included in your course tuition. It's optional for graduating from CIP and required only if you want UKIHCA Full Membership. You'll have 6 months after your CIP graduation to finish it.
The Independent Coaching Requirement has four parts, submitted together:
- A 50-session coaching log. Already logging sessions for NBHWC? Great news: the same log counts for both!
- Proof of active liability insurance for the full length of your coaching log. A guide to liability insurance for health coaches is included.
- Two sets of case session notes you’ll write up from two different (anonymous) clients, reviewed by an IIN faculty coach.
- Two additional Buddy Coaching sessions beyond the three included in CIP, at $75 each ($150 total). This is the only added IIN cost, along with purchasing your own liability insurance.
Once you meet all four, IIN emails you a UKIHCA Membership Eligibility letter. From there, you apply to UKIHCA and pay membership dues. That's it. No board exam required!
