Jim Curtis: Moving From Fear, Self-Doubt, & Old Patterns Into Possibility

Jim Curtis | IIN Visiting Faculty

Health is our relationships, career, spirituality, purpose, joy, & sense of self.

I've always been fascinated by the connection between the mind, emotions, and our ability to heal and transform. After spending years struggling with chronic pain, anxiety, and limiting beliefs, I began exploring neuroscience, mindfulness, hypnosis, and the deeper patterns that shape our lives. That personal journey taught me that lasting change doesn't come from fighting ourselves—it comes from reconnecting with who we truly are and learning to move from fear to possibility.

Q&A: Your Journey

YOU HAVE HAD A LONG HISTORY WITH IIN, INCLUDING HOLDING A LEADERSHIP ROLE HERE. HOW DID YOUR TIME AT IIN SHAPE THE WORK YOU DO TODAY?

A: IIN was a huge part of my path. It deepened my understanding that health is not just food, exercise, or symptoms. Health is relationships, career, spirituality, purpose, joy, and the way we feel about ourselves.

My time at IIN showed me the power of empowering people to become guides for others. It also helped shape my belief that true healing is holistic. We are not just bodies. We are minds, emotions, nervous systems, subconscious beliefs, and souls having a human experience.

That perspective is still at the center of everything I teach today.

YOU HAVE BEEN OPEN ABOUT YOUR OWN HEALTH JOURNEY AND HOW IT FUELS YOUR WORK. HOW DID GOING THROUGH THAT EXPERIENCE CHANGE THE WAY YOU COACH OTHERS?

A: My health journey gave me compassion. It taught me that when someone is struggling, they do not need to be judged, fixed, or told to simply think positively. They need to feel safe, seen, and supported.

It also taught me that we are not our illness, our trauma, or our past. Those experiences may shape us, but they do not have to define us.

Because I have been through deep uncertainty in my own body, I coach from a place of lived experience. I know what it feels like to want answers, to feel afraid, and to still choose possibility.

YOUR APPROACH BLENDS NEUROSCIENCE, HYPNOTHERAPY, AND SPIRITUALITY. HOW DID YOU LAND ON THAT COMBINATION, AND WHAT MADE YOU BELIEVE IT WORKED?

A: I landed on that combination because I needed it myself.

Through my own healing journey, I saw that science gave me understanding, hypnotherapy gave me access to the subconscious, and spirituality gave me meaning. Neuroscience helped explain how patterns are formed. Hypnotherapy helped shift those patterns. Spirituality helped me reconnect with love, purpose, and possibility.

I believed it worked because I experienced it first in my own life, and then I watched it help client after client release fear, change old beliefs, and step into a new identity.

Q&A: Understanding Transformation

SO MANY PEOPLE FEEL STUCK EVEN WHEN THEY ARE DOING EVERYTHING RIGHT. WHAT IS ACTUALLY HAPPENING BENEATH THE SURFACE, AND WHY IS WILLPOWER ALONE NOT ENOUGH TO CHANGE IT?

A: So many people are doing all the “right” things, but they’re doing them from an old identity. Beneath the surface, the subconscious mind is still running patterns of fear, scarcity, self-protection, unworthiness, or “this isn’t safe for me.”

Willpower is conscious. Patterns are subconscious. So, when those two are in conflict, the subconscious usually wins. That is why lasting change is not just about trying harder. It is about releasing the old programming, aligning with a new belief system, and becoming the person who naturally lives the life you want.

WHAT CAN SOMEONE EXPECT TO FEEL OR EXPERIENCE DURING A LIVE HYPNO-COACHING SESSION THAT THEY COULD NOT GET FROM READING A BOOK OR WATCHING A VIDEO?

A: A live hypno-coaching session creates a felt experience. It is not just information. It is transformation in real time.

Q&A: The Book of Possibility

YOUR NEW BOOK, THE BOOK OF POSSIBILITY, IS DESCRIBED AS A GUIDED EXPERIENCE, NOT JUST A READ. WHAT DOES THAT ACTUALLY MEAN FOR THE READER, AND WHAT DO YOU WANT THEM TO FEEL WHEN THEY FINISH IT?

A: The Book of Possibility is designed to be the next best thing to a one-on-one coaching experience with me.

The Release, Align, Become method is experienced through Read, Write, Listen exercises proven to build faster neural pathways and support more effective behavior change.

It is also written using NLP principles, so simply reading it can help create shifts in thinking and perspective.

When someone finishes the book and the companion app’s hypno-meditations, they will feel lighter and more free. And a little bonus: get the hardcover—it includes special elements.

Q&A: Building Your Career as a Health Coach

WHAT DO YOU THINK MAKES HEALTH COACHES UNIQUELY POSITIONED TO HELP PEOPLE CREATE REAL CHANGE, ESPECIALLY WHEN THE ROOT ISSUE IS NOT A LACK OF KNOWLEDGE BUT A DEEPLY INGRAINED PATTERN?

A: Health coaches are uniquely positioned because they meet people in the real moments of life, not just in theory.

Most people already know they should sleep more, move their body, eat well, or reduce stress. The issue is not always knowledge. The issue is the pattern underneath the behavior.

Health coaches can help people become aware of those patterns with compassion. They can support small, aligned actions, ask powerful questions, and help clients reconnect to their own inner wisdom. That is where real change begins. Health coaches can change the health and happiness of the world.

IN THE HEALTH COACH TRAINING PROGRAM, YOU SPEAK ABOUT IMPOSTER SYNDROME AND THE SELF-DOUBT THAT CAN HOLD PEOPLE BACK FROM STEPPING INTO THEIR FULL POTENTIAL. WHY DO YOU THINK IMPOSTER SYNDROME IS SO COMMON, EVEN AMONG HIGHLY CAPABLE PEOPLE, AND WHAT CAN WE DO TO MOVE THROUGH IT?

A: Imposter syndrome is common because so many people are comparing their internal fear to everyone else’s external confidence.

Even highly capable people carry old beliefs like, “Who am I to do this?” or “I’m not ready yet.” But often, that fear is actually a sign that you are growing into a new identity.

The way through it is not to wait until the doubt disappears. It is to take aligned action while bringing compassion to the part of you that feels afraid. Confidence comes after action, not before.

Q&A: Just for Fun

WHAT SONG WOULD YOU PLAY TO INSTANTLY SHIFT THE ENERGY IN A ROOM?

A: "No Stress, Just Vibes" — AI IRIE FM

IF YOUR SUBCONSCIOUS COULD TEXT YOU ONE MESSAGE RIGHT NOW, WHAT DO YOU THINK IT WOULD SAY?

A: The subconscious speaks in questions and stories. It would probably ask, “Are you enough?” and then the program would answer...
