Robert Notter: Helping Health Coaches Build Confidence & Grow Their Practice

IIN-01-MKTG-1300 (2)

“Helping others build fulfilling work began with finding my own."

I was working in a corporate job that didn’t fulfill me when I discovered IIN. I knew I deserved to feel happier and healthier—and I wanted to do work that made me excited to get up in the morning. Becoming a student gave me a way to explore that possibility.

Through The Health Coach Training Program™ I found a new direction and went on to build a successful coaching practice. As my business grew, I saw how many other coaches needed support turning their passion into a career. That led me back to IIN, where I built their Practice Development Program.

Today, as a business and mindset coach, I help health coaches and wellness practitioners move beyond self-doubt, communicate their value, and grow practices that reflect who they are. My approach brings together business strategy, mindset, and personal alignment—because meaningful success starts with trusting yourself and the difference you can make.

Q&A: The Beginning

WHEN YOU FIRST CROSSED PATHS WITH IIN, WHAT WAS HAPPENING IN YOUR LIFE AND CAREER, AND WHAT MADE YOU WANT TO BECOME PART OF THE COMMUNITY?

A: I was working in a corporate job that simply wasn’t fulfilling. When I discovered IIN, I attended an in-person orientation and was so impressed by what I’d learn. I knew I deserved to be happier and healthier, and I knew in my heart that becoming a student was the next step in my journey. I didn’t want to wonder “what if.” I wanted to finally do work that got me excited to get up in the morning.

HOW DID YOUR EXPERIENCE AT IIN SPARK YOUR INTEREST IN BUSINESS DEVELOPMENT AND ULTIMATELY LEAD YOU TO CREATE AND LEAD THE SCHOOL’S PRACTICE DEVELOPMENT PROGRAM? WHAT STANDS OUT MOST FROM THOSE EARLY YEARS?

A: Those early years were so special, and I look back on them with such fondness.

I left my corporate career to become a health coach and worked hard to build a successful practice. I didn’t always know exactly what I was doing, but I learned and grew along the way.

As my practice became successful, I recognized that other coaches needed support from someone who had walked the path. When the founder heard about my success, he invited me to connect, which eventually led to an invitation to create our Practice Development Program.

It was such an exciting time of exploration for all of us. We poured our hearts and souls into creating something that would genuinely help students succeed, because their success and the difference they could make in the world mattered so deeply to us. And we evolved the profession of health coaching in a way that no others had done before. It was life-changing and immensely fulfilling.

Q&A: Your IIN Journey

AFTER WORKING WITH SO MANY IIN STUDENTS AND GRADUATES, WHAT DID YOU LEARN ABOUT THE CHALLENGES AND OPPORTUNITIES THAT COME WITH TURNING A PASSION FOR HEALTH COACHING INTO A CAREER?

A: One of the biggest challenges I see for practitioners, including myself in those early days, is learning how to get out of our own way and truly trust ourselves.

We receive fantastic training, yet we sometimes question our abilities because of past experiences, self-doubt, imposter syndrome, or all those little “what ifs” that arise. The key is to have a solid plan, trust yourself, follow your heart, and allow this incredible community to support you along the way, one step at a time.

HOW HAS YOUR OWN APPROACH TO TEACHING BUSINESS AND MARKETING EVOLVED THROUGH YOUR YEARS OF WORKING WITH COACHES AND WELLNESS PRACTITIONERS?

A: In the beginning, my work focused primarily on marketing strategy, with some mindset development woven in. Over time, I also recognized that there was a repeatable framework for building a successful practice and that one could create systems that would continue working as a business grows.

But what became especially exciting was discovering how much more powerful business growth could be when it happened from the inside out. I began incorporating neuroscience, mindset development, and energetic principles into my work, helping practitioners not simply pursue success, but truly embody it.

Today, my approach integrates the whole person. It’s a unique and interconnected way of building a business in which your inner world, your values, your communication, and your practical strategies all work together in alignment.

Q&A: Business, Mindset & Authentic Marketing

YOU OFTEN TALK ABOUT BUILDING A BUSINESS THAT IS ALIGNED WITH YOUR VALUES AND PURPOSE. WHY IS THAT ALIGNMENT SO IMPORTANT?

A: Alignment is incredibly important because your work is an expression of who you are. When there’s a disconnect between your business and your authentic self, that disconnect can show up in your marketing, your communication, and the way potential clients experience you.

But when your work becomes a genuine expression of your mission, vision, and values, everything begins to come together. Your message is clearer, your confidence grows, and the people you’re meant to serve can connect with you more naturally.

WHAT ARE SOME OF THE BIGGEST MINDSET BARRIERS YOU SEE HEALTH COACHES AND WELLNESS ENTREPRENEURS ENCOUNTER WHEN THEY’RE TRYING TO GROW THEIR BUSINESSES?

A: Comparison, imposter syndrome, self-doubt, and worrying about what other people might think are some of the biggest barriers coaches and practitioners face.

Ultimately, it’s about learning to trust your own path and remembering that we’re offering something that can genuinely change people’s lives. When you allow that vision to guide you, you begin to recognize that thoughts are simply thoughts, and thoughts can be changed.

Sometimes our fears are like little shadows that we imagine are enormous, frightening bears. But when we finally look at them more closely, we discover they’re really just little chipmunks that aren’t scary after all!

HOW CAN SOMEONE BECOME MORE COMFORTABLE TALKING ABOUT THE VALUE OF THEIR WORK WITHOUT FEELING LIKE THEY’RE BEING OVERLY SALES-FOCUSED OR “SELLING” THEMSELVES?

A: One of the most important shifts is recognizing that we’re not really “selling” something. We’re offering people an opportunity to improve their lives, and that is worth more than money can ever measure.

Growing your practice is about connecting with people in a genuine, heart-centered way. It’s about helping them recognize what’s possible and showing them how, with your compassion, guidance, and support, they can invest in themselves and reach their goals.

As human beings, we’re all connected. The more people we help, the greater the positive impact we create in the world. It’s not about selling; it’s about being of service to those who truly want and need it.

FOR A COACH WHO IS JUST BEGINNING TO BUILD THEIR BUSINESS, WHAT IS ONE AREA YOU WOULD ENCOURAGE THEM TO FOCUS ON BEFORE TRYING TO DO EVERYTHING AT ONCE?

A: Take things one step at a time. Start by looking at the people you already know. Who might benefit from your work? Who might be able to introduce you to someone who needs your support?

And most importantly, begin practicing! Find one person to work with. Get your feet in the water instead of just sitting by the pool, and begin gaining real experience.

You don’t need to have everything figured out or perfectly in place before you begin. Sometimes the greatest growth comes simply from taking that first step and learning along the way.

Q&A: The Work Today

WHAT CONTINUES TO EXCITE YOU ABOUT WORKING WITH HEALTH COACHES, WELLNESS PRACTITIONERS, AND ENTREPRENEURS AFTER ALL THESE YEARS?

A: What inspires me most is seeing how passionate health coaches and wellness practitioners are about making a difference in the world.

I love witnessing the excitement that emerges when someone begins to recognize that the possibilities for their practice really do exist and that they, as one person, can make an extraordinary difference.

Watching someone move from self-doubt and uncertainty to creating a fulfilling practice that genuinely impacts people’s lives is one of the greatest honors of my work.

CAN YOU SHARE A MOMENT OR EXPERIENCE WITH A CLIENT OR ENTREPRENEUR THAT REMINDED YOU WHY YOU DO THIS WORK?

A: I once worked with a health coaching client, and we made great progress during our program together. Five years later, I unexpectedly ran into him, and he came up to me, gave me a huge hug, and began crying. He told me that the work we’d done together was still having a profound impact on his life and that his health, relationships, and overall happiness continued to improve. He said he would not be where he was today if he hadn’t worked with me.

To know that I’d made such a lasting difference in someone’s life was absolutely priceless. It’s moments like those that remind me why this work matters so much.

WHAT DOES ALIGNMENT LOOK LIKE IN YOUR OWN WORK, AND HOW DO YOU STAY CONNECTED TO IT AS YOUR BUSINESS EVOLVES?

A: I make self-care an important part of my life, and I continually ensure that my business remains an expression of my heart and my values.

I also recognize that there’s always more to learn. I surround myself with people, colleagues, and mentors who inspire me, challenge my thinking, and help me expand the impact of my work.

And I continue challenging myself to step outside my comfort zone, create, innovate, and share ideas that genuinely help people see new possibilities. I don’t want my work to simply blend in with the crowd. I want it to make a meaningful difference.

Q&A: Staying Connected to IIN

YOU’VE BEEN PART OF THE IIN COMMUNITY FOR MANY YEARS. WHAT HAS KEPT YOU CONNECTED TO THE SCHOOL AND ITS GRADUATES OVER TIME?

A: Integrative Nutrition changed my life in so many positive ways, and I’m a better human being because of it. That heart connection I’ve always felt with the community has always been there. There’s such a wonderful sense of possibility, belonging, and shared purpose.

Returning to teach at Integrative Nutrition has truly felt like coming home. It’s a community that was incredibly special to me from the beginning, and it continues to hold such a meaningful place in my heart today.

EXPERIENCE IIN CREATES OPPORTUNITIES FOR THE IIN COMMUNITY TO CONTINUE LEARNING, CONNECTING, AND EXPLORING WELLNESS TOGETHER BEYOND THE ORIGINAL STUDENT EXPERIENCE. AS A FACILITATOR FOR THE NOVEMBER EXPERIENCE, WHAT ARE YOU MOST LOOKING FORWARD TO SHARING WITH THE COMMUNITY?

A: My hope is that participants come away recognizing that their health, happiness, and the lives they create truly begin from within. We each have an extraordinary capacity to make positive changes in so many areas of our lives.

By understanding how our minds work and how quantum energy affects us, and combining that awareness with practical planning and action, we can create greater success both internally and externally.

I want people to recognize the power they already have within themselves to create lives filled with greater fulfillment, joy, and possibility. And having the honor of sharing these ideas with a community that means so much to me makes the experience even more special.

Q&A: Reflection & Looking Ahead

WHEN YOU LOOK BACK ON MORE THAN TWO DECADES OF COACHING AND TEACHING, WHAT HAS THIS WORK TAUGHT YOU ABOUT SUCCESS?

A: Success is an inside job.

Marketing and business strategies are important, but when you truly understand who you are, believe in the value of what you offer, and can communicate that with confidence, even when doubts arise, your authentic strengths begin to shine through.

I also believe that success is deeply personal. Everyone has their own definition of what a successful life and practice look like. For me, success comes down to joy, impact, and freedom.

WHAT ARE YOU MOST EXCITED TO CONTINUE EXPLORING OR CREATING IN THE NEXT CHAPTER OF YOUR WORK?

A: I’m continually inspired to deepen my understanding of how the mind works, particularly how our conscious and unconscious belief systems influence our behavior, decisions, and the results we create.

I’m especially passionate about exploring how we can tap into the extraordinary power of our beliefs while remaining connected to our hearts. When we bring those elements together, we open ourselves to new possibilities for creating meaningful and lasting success, both personally and professionally.
